What is a Barre Workout?
Barre is a ballet-inspired fitness method that has become one of the most popular low-impact workouts for toning and strengthening. Don’t let the ballet barre intimidate you – you don’t need any dance experience to love this class!
Barre uniquely combines:
- Ballet – Graceful movements at the barre for balance and leg work
- Pilates – Core engagement and precise, controlled movements
- Yoga – Flexibility, breathing, and mind-body connection
- Resistance Training – Small, isometric movements that create long, lean muscles
The result? A challenging, fun workout that sculpts your entire body.
How Barre Works
Barre workouts use small, controlled movements – often only a few inches – repeated many times. These isometric holds and pulses target specific muscle groups, creating that signature “barre shake” that means your muscles are working hard!
You’ll work at the ballet barre for leg exercises, on the mat for core work, and use light weights or bands for arm sculpting. The variety keeps every class interesting and your body challenged.

Frequently Asked Questions About Barre
Do I need dance experience to take barre classes?
Absolutely not! While barre is ballet-inspired, no dance background is needed. Our teachers explain every movement clearly and demonstrate proper form. The focus is on fitness and toning, not dance technique. Most of our barre clients have never danced before.
I'm not flexible. Can I still do barre?
Yes! Flexibility is something you’ll build through barre, not something you need before starting. The barre provides support, and teachers show modifications for tighter muscles. You’ll be amazed at how your flexibility improves with regular practice.
Will barre make me bulky?
No! Barre creates long, lean muscles through high repetitions with light or no weights. The movements elongate muscles while toning them. You’ll get definition and strength without bulk.
How is barre different from regular strength training?
Traditional strength training uses heavier weights and larger movements to build muscle mass. Barre uses small, isometric movements (often only 1-2 inches!) with light or no weight to create lean, toned muscles.
Can I do barre if I'm over 60?
Absolutely! Barre is wonderful for older adults because the barre provides support for balance work, and movements can be modified to your fitness level. It builds the strength, flexibility, and balance needed for healthy aging. Many of our Body-Stream clients in their 50s and 60s love barre!
How often should I take barre classes to see results?
For best results, we recommend 2-3 times per week. However, we currently offer 1 barre class per week, which many clients combine with our Pilates reformer or mat classes for a complete fitness routine. Consistency is more important than frequency.
What's the "barre shake" everyone talks about?
The shake is a trembling of your muscles during isometric holds – it means you’re working at the edge of your strength, which is where change happens! It’s completely normal and actually a sign you’re getting a great workout. Embrace the shake!
Can I combine barre with Pilates classes?
Yes! This is actually an excellent combination. Many of our clients take 2 Pilates reformer or mat classes and 1 barre class per week. They complement each other beautifully – Pilates focuses on core and rehabilitation, while barre adds leg/glute work and cardio elements.
I haven't exercised in years. Is barre too advanced for me?
Not at all! Barre is very accessible to beginners. Our small class sizes mean you get personal attention and modifications. You work at your own level, and teachers guide you through proper form. Start where you are – we’ll help you progress safely.
What should I wear to barre class?
Wear comfortable workout clothes that allow you to move freely.
Leggings or fitted pants work better than loose shorts (so your teacher can see your alignment).
You can wear clean socks or go barefoot – both are fine. No special shoes needed!
Will barre help me lose weight?
Barre is excellent for toning and reshaping your body. While it does burn calories, it’s not primarily a weight-loss workout – it’s a body-sculpting workout – which helps create that lean, defined look many people want.
Can men do barre classes?
Of course! While barre classes tend to attract more women, men can absolutely benefit. Barre builds core strength, leg power, flexibility, and balance – all beneficial for everyone. Several professional male athletes incorporate barre into their training.
