Pilates Reformer & Pilates Mat Classes in Utrecht
Authentic Pilates with Experienced Teachers. Small Groups . All Levels Welcome
We offer Pilates reformer group classes and private sessions, as well as Pilates mat classes in Utrecht.
Pilates at Body-Stream is real Pilates, the authentic Pilates, rather than a modern deviation of Pilates-like fitness that many experience elsewhere. Pilates is all about mindfulness, precision, and the harmony between body and mind.
A skilled instructor understands the core Pilates principles, knows the body inside and out, and designs each session around your individual needs. A true teacher sees you, meets you where you are, and helps you move safely, consciously, and with confidence – this is what distinguishes authentic Pilates from fitness classes that borrow its name.
At Body-Stream, all our teachers are comprehensively trained with over 500 hours of certification in classical and contemporary Pilates methods. Whether you’re a complete beginner, recovering from an injury, or an advanced practitioner – we offer the genuine Pilates experience that transforms how you move and feel in your body.
What is the Pilates Method?
Pilates is a functional movement method developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the whole body through core strength.
Pilates improves:
- Flexibility and mobility throughout your entire body
- Strength in your core, back, arms, and legs
- Spinal length and alignment
- Control and endurance
- Coordination and balance
- Posture and body awareness
It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong powerhouse (your core), and improving coordination and balance.
The beauty of Pilates is in its adaptability. Modification is the key to Pilates exercise success. Both Pilates performed on the mat and the equipment (reformer, Cadillac, chair, barrels) can be modified in a range of difficulty from beginner to advanced, or adjusted to any level according to your specific goals and limitations.
Whether you’re 40, 60, or 70+, recovering from surgery, managing chronic pain, or training as an athlete – Pilates meets you where you are.
Pilates Reformer Group Classes
The Pilates reformer is a specialized piece of equipment with a sliding carriage, springs, bar and straps, that provides both support and resistance.
This allows for over 500 different exercises – you’ll never be bored!
What Makes Pilates Reformer Special?
The reformer goes beyond what’s possible with mat Pilates, yet is still accessible to complete beginners. The machine supports your body while the springs provide adjustable resistance, making exercises easier or more challenging depending on your needs.
We train mostly in a neutral spine position, working to increase core strength while building strength in the arms and legs. The Pilates equipment supports you to train more intensively, delivering a highly targeted and personalized workout that leaves you feeling stronger and longer than ever.

â—Ź You prefer the support and feedback of equipment
â—Ź You're recovering from an injury and need modifications

Frequently Asked Questions About Pilates
What should I expect in my first Pilates class?
Arrive 5 minutes early. Your teacher will have a brief conversation with you about your experience level, any injuries or concerns, and what you hope to achieve. During class, they’ll guide you through exercises, demonstrate proper form, and provide modifications. Focus on learning and listening to your body – there is no need to be perfect!
I've never done Pilates before. Should I start with mat or reformer?
Both are suitable for beginners! We advise those new to pilates to join either group Basic or Beginner Reformer lessons, Open Level Mat classes or book a private session to have individual attention and guidance. The reformer equipment actually makes many exercises easier because the machine provides support and mat classes teach you the foundational principles. Many beginners start with Pilates reformer and love it. You can also try both and see what you prefer.Â
Please note that our Reformer Open Level classes are more suitable to those who have prior experience with both Pilates and the reformer equipment.
I've never done Pilates before. Is private instruction better than joining a group class?
Both options work well for beginners, and the choice depends on your preferences and needs. In our small group classes (maximum 8 for reformer, 12-15 for mat), you’ll still receive personal attention and modifications from your teacher. Your teacher will have a brief conversation with you before your first class to understand your experience level and any concerns, and they’ll provide corrections and adaptations throughout the class.
Private instruction offers one-on-one focus where the entire session is tailored to your body, which can be especially beneficial if you have specific injuries, limitations, or feel more comfortable learning individually. Many clients start with group classes and add occasional private sessions to deepen their understanding, while others begin with a few private sessions to build confidence before joining groups.
The good news? Our small group sizes mean you get much more attention than typical large Pilates classes, giving you the opportunity to receive some of the personal guidance and care that a private lesson would offer.Â
Will Pilates help with my back pain?
Pilates is widely recommended by physiotherapists for back pain because it strengthens the deep core muscles that support your spine. However, we recommend discussing with your doctor first, especially if you have acute pain. Please inform your teacher (some with physiotherapy backgrounds), as they can modify exercises to ensure you move safely.
I have knee problems. Can I still do Pilates?
Yes! Many of our clients have knee issues. Pilates reformer is particularly good because exercises can be modified to avoid stressing your knees while still building strength in the supporting muscles. Always inform your teacher about your knee concerns before class.
Can I do Pilates if I've had hip replacement surgery?
Yes, with your doctor’s clearance. We have experience working with clients post-hip replacement and all of our teachers are educated in rehabilitation. We recommend starting with private sessions to establish safe movement patterns, then progressing to small group classes.Â
How often should I do Pilates to see results?
Most clients see the best results with 2-3 classes per week. Consistency matters more than intensity. Many of our clients combine reformer with mat or barre classes. We’ll help you find a schedule that fits your life and goals.
How often should I have private sessions?
This depends on your goals, needs, and budget. If you’re starting with private sessions (perhaps due to injury or wanting to build a strong foundation), weekly sessions provide the most consistent progress and fastest learning. Many clients begin with weekly private sessions for 4-6 weeks, then transition to group classes while adding occasional private sessions (monthly or bi-monthly) for refinement and progression. Some clients maintain regular private sessions long-term, typically 1-2 times per week, often combined with group classes. For rehabilitation or specific concerns, your teacher can recommend the frequency that will best support your recovery and goals.
Can I book a duet session with my partner or friend?
Yes! Duet sessions work well when both people are at similar levels or have similar goals. You’ll still receive personalized attention while enjoying the shared experience. Duets are popular with couples and friends who want to practice together.
What's the difference between your Pilates and other studios?
Our small group sizes (maximum 8 for reformer, 12-15 for mat) ensure personal attention. All our teachers have 500+ hours of comprehensive training – not weekend certifications. We focus on helping you feel at home in your body, modifying exercises to your needs, and creating a welcoming community. Many of our clients are 40-70+ and have found the perfect fit here after trying other studios.
Do I need to be fit or flexible to start Pilates?
Absolutely not! Fitness and flexibility are things we build through Pilates. Our teachers work with complete beginners, older adults, people with injuries, and those who haven’t exercised in years. Start where you are – we’ll meet you there.
Can men do Pilates?
Of course! Joseph Pilates was a man, and the method is excellent for men. We have male teachers (including Alexander Bakker, our co-owner) and many male clients. Pilates builds core strength, flexibility, and body control that benefit everyone, regardless of gender.
How is Pilates different from yoga?
While both emphasize mind-body connection, Pilates focuses more on core strength, precise movements, and using equipment (especially the reformer). Yoga emphasizes flexibility, holding poses, and spiritual aspects. Many people do both! We also offer Iyengar yoga for those interested.
Can I try a single class before committing to a package?
Yes! You can book individual classes to try us out. We recommend trying at least 3-4 classes to really feel the benefits, but single drop-ins are available. Check our Pricing page for current rates and package options.Â
What if I need to cancel my class?
You can cancel up to 12 hours before group classes and 24 hours before private classes through our booking system Eversports.Â
Because we train in small groups and some classes fill up quickly, please let us know as soon as possible so clients on the waiting list can join.
