What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar yoga was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, who is considered one of the most gifted and charismatic yoga teachers of our time. His method has influenced yoga practice worldwide and is known for its emphasis on precision and alignment.

The Iyengar Approach

Iyengar yoga is an active form of yoga in which your body is challenged to achieve perfection in all positions (asanas). The emphasis is on precision and alignment, balance and stability, energy and strength, and relaxation and focus.

Iyengar yoga is famous for its use of props – blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, and chairs. They’re tools that help you achieve proper alignment and access poses safely, making yoga accessible to all bodies and abilities.

Who Are Private Iyengar Yoga Sessions For?

Perfect for You If:

  • You’re New to Yoga: Private sessions are an excellent way to start your yoga journey. Learn proper foundations without feeling lost or overwhelmed in a group class.
  • You Have Specific Physical Concerns: Back pain, joint issues, limited flexibility, past injuries, or chronic conditions – private sessions can be adapted to work with your body.
  • You Want to Deepen Your Practice: Already practice yoga? Private sessions allow you to refine technique, work on challenging poses, and explore subtleties you might miss in group classes.
  • You’re 60+ and Want Individual Attention: Many older adults prefer private sessions for the personalized pacing and attention to their specific needs. The use of props makes poses accessible.
  • You Feel Intimidated by Group Classes: If the thought of practicing in front of others makes you uncomfortable, private sessions offer a safe, supportive space to learn.
  • You Want to Practice with a Partner: Duet sessions allow couples, friends, or family members at similar levels to practice together while still receiving personalized guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Iyengar Yoga

What's the difference between Iyengar and other yoga styles?

Iyengar yoga emphasizes precision and alignment in every pose and uses props extensively. Unlike flow-based styles (Vinyasa), poses are held longer to allow deep work. Unlike Yin or restorative yoga, Iyengar is active and strength-building. The attention to detail and systematic progression make it unique.

Absolutely not! This is the most common misconception about yoga. Flexibility is something you develop through practice, not a prerequisite. Iyengar yoga is particularly good for inflexible people because props help you access poses safely while building flexibility gradually.

Private instruction is actually an excellent way to start! You’ll learn proper foundations, understand what you’re doing and why, and can ask questions freely. Many people find they progress faster with private instruction initially, then feel confident joining group classes later (if desired).

Iyengar yoga is widely recommended by doctors and physiotherapists for back pain. The precision and use of props allow you to strengthen and stretch safely. However, you should consult your doctor first, especially with acute pain. Let your teacher know about your back concerns so they can design appropriate sessions.

Props include blocks, straps, blankets, bolsters, and chairs. They’re tools that help you achieve proper alignment and access poses your body might not be ready for yet. Props make yoga accessible to all ages and abilities. Even advanced practitioners use props!

Yes! Iyengar yoga is particularly well-suited for older adults and those with joint concerns. Props provide support, poses can be extensively modified, and the precise approach ensures you work within safe ranges. Many of our clients are 60+ and benefit greatly from private yoga.

This depends on your goals and budget. Weekly sessions provide consistent progress. Bi-weekly works well for maintenance or when combined with other practices. Even monthly sessions can be valuable for guidance and refinement. Your teacher can recommend frequency based on your objectives.

Yes! Duet sessions work well when both people are at similar levels or have similar goals. You’ll still receive personalized attention while enjoying the shared experience. Duets are popular with couples and friends who want to practice together.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move and stretch freely. Avoid anything too loose that might get in the way. You’ll practice barefoot (yoga tradition). No special clothing required – just comfort and modesty.

Our sessions are 55 minutes long.

Not unless you want to! Your practice is tailored to your level and goals. You’ll work on poses appropriate for your body right now. If you’re interested in more challenging poses, your teacher will help you build the foundation needed to approach them safely.
